Before I begin, let me say that costumes are really not my all time specialty, so if you've got a great costume idea you want to share, by all means drop me a line!
As a kid, I always went as a gypsy- I think it's because I love gaudy jewelry- but each year I tried to add to my costume to make it perfect. My mom would always try to convince me to go as something else, but it rarely worked!
Now I dress differently every Halloween, & my husband is the one who adds to his costume every year!
I can't stress enough the goodies you can find at the Salvation Army! Scout around the S.A. & garage sales & flea markets late summer when Halloween is far from everyone's minds- beat the Halloween rush! :-) Suits & prom dresses you can mutilate without a moment of guilt! 'Brady Bunch' clothes! Wigs! (eech!) And all around wierd stuff! Thrift shops are the zombie's, hobo's, hippie's, gypsy's & evil clown's paradise!
An old white dress doubles as a Princess Leia or Bride of Frankenstien. Those long 'broomstick' skirts are great for witches & gypsies.
Speaking of gypsies, it's been a while for me, but from what I remember, I wore a lot of my mom's scarves (hey, it was the 70's!) A lot of costume jewelry, & I carried a 'crystal ball' which was a styrofoam ball rolled in glue, then in multicolored glitter. Today's gypsy has the luxury of fake precious stone jewelry (I had plastic 70's jewelry- a costume in itself now!) Body glitter, & scarves are back!
A 'Good Witch' is also fun to put together. There's plenty of cute versions of the witch hat out there to start with, & build around that. Use a colorful long broomstick skirt, or an old bridesmaid or prom dress. (I told you, the S.A. or Goodwill will come in handy!) Make or buy a glittery wand, slap some colorful make-up & body glitter on. Decorate an old pair of shoes with glitter or feathers or whatever, do the same with the brim of your hat- if you decide to forgo buying one of the 'pre-decorated' ones! Get a package of plastic spiders or insects & roll them in glue & glitter. Use fabric glue to glue them on your hat & dress.
