Make sure the surface is clean and dry. Wax, oil, and dirt and your enemies.
If there is old paint, make sure it is solid. Flaking paint must be removed.
Read the label on the glue.
It helps if the surface is porous or a little rough; it gives the glue something to "grip" on. You might want to scuff the surface with fine sand paper; or even sand it all over. Either way, wipe off the dust afterwards.

Store unused glue in a cool, dry place. Any environment that you feel comfortable in is ideal for storage of glue, paint, and ammunition. This means that, ideally, you should avoid attic and garage storage. Your living room would be great if your spouse can stand a dozen old cans of paint, a dozen tubes of assorted glue, and a few ammo cans of .223 Remington. Perhaps stacking it neatly will help.
Keep unused glue, well-sealed. Usually, this just means put the top back on the container.
Two-component glues, like epoxy, can not be stored once mixed. Use it, or it hardens into a lump.

During curing, epoxy gets hot; the bigger the mass of epoxy, the hotter it gets. Small applications aren't a problem, but if you mix up a big batch of epoxy in order to fill in a hole, it could get hot enough to burn you or melt a plastic container.
