Plenty of Problems With X10.com

We really like X-10 remote control and automation equipment. We use it around the house and we haunt with X-10 for Halloween.

But our experience with the company x10.com has been so horrible over so long a span of time that we want nothing more to do with them. We plan to buy our equipment elsewhere.

It is our opinion that the issues involved with shopping at x10.com outweigh any benefits. (As alternatives, we have had good experiences with homesecuritystore.com and smarthome.com. We have no financial connection to any of these companies.)

The story ranges from persistent spam to terrible customer service. And we're going to tell you all about it, so you can make your own decision.

Spam

E-mail solicitations from x10.com are frequent (sometimes several a day), lengthy, and graphics-intensive. If you have a low bandwidth connection and a local mail client, spam from x10.com can seriously slow down your e-mail access.

But it's not spam if you opt-in, right? Only if it is done right.

I have opted out of x10.com e-mail several times, eventually had the flow stop - only to have it mysteriously restart later. Once I got an e-mail from them apologizing, saying that they had accidently retet their mail list.

In one instance, I had made a purchase and opted out of e-mail. Then the e-mail started again about two years later.

If I were inclined to be charitable, I might write it off to technical problems on their side. But I have gotten tired of giving them the benefit of the doubt.

Hard-Sell Web Site

X10.com is all about the hard sell. They push you hard in their e-mail and they push you hard on their web site.

Every product page lists a bunch of other things to buy. And each purchase encourages you to buy more stuff to go with it.

There is no such thing as popping in to X10.xom, searching up the product you want, and completing an order without lots of pain.

Customer Service

Sometimes it takes a long time for x10.com customer service to respond to e-mail. Sometimes they never do.
