Don't get too close to that crate!
There's a monster inside!

What Does It Do?
This page is about the original software used in the
PROP-1
microcontroller
that operates the prop.
The software does quite a lot, but we have taken it about as far as it can go using the
limited capacity of this particular controller.
Part of the reason that we ran into a wall is that the cheap surplus
solenoid valves
that we
used
for our
pneumatics
(Mead LTV-120)
require more software to control that other valves do.
When all is said and done, this is what the Crate Beast does:
- Crate sits quietly, occasionally doing something to attract attention.
- 25% of the time - just make a (random) sound
- 25% of the time - just bang the lid
- 25% of the time - bang the lid and make a (random) sound
- 25% of the time - do nothing
- We never have the beast attack automatically - we want to make sure that the area is clear so nobody is hurt.
- By X-10 remote control, PROP-1 can be told to bang the lid.
- The number of bangs and timing getween them is random, so that it doesn't seem mechanically repeating.
- By X-10 remote control, PROP-1 can be told to run an attack sequence:
- Make a roaring sound.
- Crash open the side of the box.
- Make the beast jump out.
- Reset for next scare.
