Greetings, thrill-seeking friends, I see you are all gluttons for
punishment. Well, you've certainly come to the right place then. Pardon
the mess down here, just cleaning up from the Halloween festivities.
October may be past, but the brisk air and long nights are all the better to
hunker before the screen and watch some ghoulish delights. This month's
classic is Alien, one which is sure to raise your eyebrows along with your
blood pressure.
This film set the standard for sci-fi thrillers. Intense action, outstanding special effects, a haunting video score, memorable characters, growing suspense, and lurid atmosphere - everything is covered and mastered. Horror was taken to the next level with this movie, and each part of it is powerful, lacking any vulnerable points. The cast is equal in standing, all carrying strong roles, the lead being Sigourney Weaver as Ripley, and Tom Skerritt as Captain Dallas. Directed in 1979 by Ridley Scott, this film is great on wide screen and has seen several sequels, with the second one, Aliens, a classic in its own right, rare with remakes of any genre.
The plot centers around the ship's crew being awakened to investigate a mysterious planet, full of shadows and swirling mist, where they uncover an ancient wreckage of an unknown vessel, harboring the eggs of an incredible species, one which eventually proves to be sinister in its perfection as a primeval survivalist and predator of unsurpassed ability.
The story line is smooth, with some unforgettable scenes, especially as the infant alien breaks free of its unsuspecting human host. The hunt is soon on, but as the creature matures at a frenetic rate, the hunted quickly becomes the hunter.
Diabolical conspiracies and hateful villains appear in the form of the ruthless corporation which controls the ship and crew, subsequently changing their original orders, and they will go to any means in procuring the creature as something to study and learn from, humans becoming an expendable resource.
You would be remiss not to have this movie in your science fiction and horror collection, as very few have risen to this level of suspense and terror. I consider it the best in its field, and many others have attempted to replicate this classic, but have fallen short. Until next time, pleasant screams - just don't look beneath the bed.
