Run for your life!
What would you do if you suspected you were going to be poisoned? This story tells of Alice and Boone--two kids who sense their stepfather Simon Jester's malice. Though they tell their mother Meg that he wants to kill them, she closes her eyes. Then, one night, she goes into her children's room to tuck them in. Instead, she says, "Run." The story that led up to that night is revealed through events that are both terrible and shocking.
Kathy Hepinstall's second novel is a powerful statement about the disintegration of a family. The opening sentence is a great hook, and the book lives up to it. "All these years later, there remains a scar on my face."
I took the emotional journey that Alice, Boone, Meg, and a girl named Persley Snow did. Persley's story is one that catches and holds your attention just as Boone and Alice's involvement with her do.
