Treason & Triumph
~Review by Victoria Tarrani~

Author: Bonnie Toews
ISBN: 0969796714

This book is a page-turner. Bonnie Toews reveals beauty of love and friendship and the unimaginable horror that was reality of WWII as if she lived through it. Her style is excellent and the research is powerful. As in any great book, characters change according to their experiences in an ever escalating war and the aftermath of its destruction.

Kristallnacht (November 9, 1938) would more appropriately have been named The Night Satan Broke out of Hell to Feast upon the Innocent. It was the night the Nazis coordinated an attack on Jewish people and their property in Germany and German-controlled lands. To see what happens to a baby, in front of his parents, is a shocking scene that does not leave your mind. Knowing this is only one incident that actually happened to a group of people who were assaulted because of their religion is a terrible reminder that we are doomed to repeat history if we, the people of the world, do not learn from the past.

War is not something that happens to someone else; it is visual and painful. Treason and Triumph is one of the best books I have read. Neither my mother nor I could put it aside until this war had ended. Details are revealed through dialogue and visual impact. Your suspicions about the traitor grow just as they do in the cast of characters. Toews descriptions are sharp. The faces and places provide a surrealistic vision as if you are looking through a window or at a collection of photographs.

This is a book to be read and read again. It shows the reality of treason and fills your heart with triumph. This book would make an excellent movie.
