-Stan Winston Creatures 'Blood Wolves' Figures -
'Stan Winston Creatures' presents 'Blood Wolves!'
This is the latest series of action figures from this new company by this legend of
SFX. It consists of four figures (three werewolves and one human 'Trakk,' a recurring
character in the 'Stan Winston Creatures' universe).
"Under a full winter moon, a clan of fierce warriors made a blood oath around the
bonfire. In exchange for their humanity, they would become almost unstoppable in
battle. Transformed into terrible creatures of lore... beasts known as Werewolves.
Now a band of noble Knights must fight against the tyranny of this dark war tribe.
A tribe more savage than all the rest -- rumored to be not even man. They are the
Blood Wolves."
Colors: Very well done. Mostly various shades of gray, black, brown, and tan. Very
fitting on these figures.
Details/Realisticness: The details are spectacular!
Very well done.
Posability: This is the one feature where they're lacking. They're all pretty limited
in their poses and articulation.
Sturdiness: They seem very sturdy but some of the joints are tight and require a bit
of force which I didn't feel too comfortable with.
Dimensions/weight: They're a good size, about 4" to 7.25." Very heavy for their size.
Displayability: Once you getting them standing, they're fairly stable. But some are
top heavy and tend to fall over.
Packaging: Great packaging. Very colorful and detailed. They come individually carded
in the usual plastic bubbles. The top right of each card has a graphic of that character.
Behind the bubble on the card, is a fantastic display of a moonlit landscape. The back
of each card shows all four figures in poses on a cool display. Nearer the bottom is a
blurb about the Blood Wolves history and the names of all of the creators are listed as
if they were movie credits.
Instructions/catalogs/Other paperwork: Not much but each comes with a data card for
each character. Also, you get a 1 year free membership to the Official 'Stan Winston
Collectors Club!
Price: The price I've seen everywhere is about $10 each or $40 per set.
Availability: There's some controversy between 'Stan Winston Creatures' and 'Toys 'R' Us'
over toy distribution. So at this time, these toys are not being sold at 'Toys 'R' Us,'
where they would've been much more available. You can try local comics shops or online,
as I did. I can recommend two online stores. Normally, I'd have bought them from BBTS
(Big Bad Toy Store) but I found this cool deal at a Yahoo store, 'The Collector's Club.'
Their price is $40.00 plus shipping and you get the set of four figures PLUS the first
2000 orders (so they say) also get a limited edition "Wulv" Lithograph drawn and signed
by Stan Wintson himself! The litho did it for me and now sits in a frame on my wall.
Their shipping was a bit steep at $10 (for me, from NJ to me in PA) but with the litho,
it's great!
The order took about ten days to ship due to the Christmas & New Year's but once shipped,
it arrived in two days by FedEX!
Individual figure reviews:-
Wulv: "Wulv is the lead hunter of the pack. His keen senses allow him to stalk human
prey in the cover of night. Come sunrise, his carnage is the only proof that this
stealthy predator was ever there."
The best looking, most werewolf-like of the set. He's in a slightly hunched over position,
wearing a shredded shirt and pants, bare footed, with long arms that end in clawed hands,
and two broken chains on his wrists. His head is very wolf-like, with glaring eyes and
a wide snarl that shows his teeth; he truly looks menacing!
He has 4 points of articulation including his right elbow, neck, and both thighs. He
stands at 7.25" tall. Accessories include: display base with bones (a rib cage) molded on
it and two foot pegs to hold the figure up, and three bones (femurs). He's the least stable
to stand as he's top heavy.
Vereticus: "A former king deposed for his treachery. Vereticus took the dark oath and now
lives as part man, part vicious beast. His goal is to reclaim the throne and put the
Kingdom under the rule of the Werewolves."
The oddest of the set, a werewolf in knight's armor!
He stands perfectly straight and is fully dressed in silver armor and cowl with his sword
held pointed downward. He looks very regal. He has 5 points of articulation including
his neck, shoulders and both thighs. He stands at 6" tall. Accessories include: display
base with an axe and target to hold an arrow (as if he were shot at) molded on it and NO
foot pegs to hold the figure up (he needs pegs but stood up okay if not shook), three
arrows, sword (which is held straight downward; I don't see how it's detachable from his
hands so I can pose his arms differently), and helmet with head (head attaches with helmet,
after detaching his un-helmeted head, strange as both are the same shaped head).
Lycon: "Lycon is the Guardian of the pack. His ferocious defense tactics keep even the
most ardent attackers at bay. Stout and low to the ground, he is the perfect shield of
protection."
The wildest of the set, an almost wild dog type figure. He is on all fours like a dog
or gorilla with shorter legs and his jaws are opened wide with huge, gaping jaws. He
looks ready to pounce on anyone in his path. He has 7 points of articulation including
his neck, shoulders, thighs, and ankles, making him the most posable of the werewolves.
He stands at about 3" tall as he's on all fours. Accessories include: display base with
a torch molded on it and NO foot pegs (he doesn't needs them).
Medieval Trakk: "Like a sentry from an ancient time, the mysterious warrior Trakk comes
to the aid of the humans in their battle against the 'Blood Wolves.' Along with his
sword "Man of War," 'Trakk' also wields the power of his massive arm - capable of a
supernatural energy that can decimate his foes and crumble walls. But the arm must be
used sparingly and wisely for it drains 'Trakk' of his power after each use."
The lone man of the set. He is fully decked out in silver armor (one arm uncovered),
red cowl and sleeves (on his upper arms). He can wear his armored faceplate and hold
his detachable sword and shield. He has 9 points of articulation including his neck,
shoulders, elbows, thighs and knees swivel, making him the most posable of the set. He
stands at about 7.25" tall. Accessories include: display base with two steps molded on
it and one foot peg, helmet, sword, shield, and knife with sheath.
Conclusion:-
This is a very detailed set of figures that look great on display. As toys to play with,
they're not very good for children. For horror and werewolf fans, like myself, these are great!
Check them out!
