Welcome to one of the main features of 'Castle Dracula,' the movie reviews section.
The reviews placed here are from all around the world, from the USA to the UK Japan
and everything inbetween. The formats reviewed are video and DVD. I have included the
origin of the film reviewed so you can check your player for compatibility. You may
also notice that there are some DVD-R reviews. These are not 'bootlegs' or 'copies'
but official screeners that I have been sent containing an as yet unreleased film to
review. All the reviews here have been reviewed either by myself or my current movie
reviewers. If you're an avid watcher of horror movies then why not join 'Castle Dracula'
as an official 'staff member' reviewing them. To do so, just click on the 'Join My Staff'
link in the menu to the left for details of this and other vacancies.
New reviews are normally placed here once a week, check my front page for under 'Castle
Dracula Updates' to see what latest movie reviews have been placed.
- Blair Witch Project - US DVD -
This has got to be one of the most misunderstood films of all time.
The trouble with watching this film in England was, we didn't get exposed to
all the "internet hype" that we needed to fall for the "con".
You see, the concept started out in America on the internet, just an idea.
A little "story" that people began to take a bit too serious.
When the creators saw this, they added a bit more to the story, people lapped
it up, so more and more was added.
Thus, it grew like some kind of technological Frankenstein, completely out of
control.
Eventually, the decision was made to turn it into a film, but not just any film,
but they didn't have a lot of money, so it would have to be cheap.
Using mostly a hi8 camera, a group of "wannabe" actors were packed off into
"Burkittesville Woods" with very little script and "contrary to popular belief"
very little knowledge of what they were supposed to do.
The result, in my opinion, is one of the cleverest and spookiest horror movies
ever.
I managed to get hold of this DVD import the day the film opened at our cinemas.
I watched it in the only way to watch it.
At the pictures, it doesn't work, too many distractions.
Too many dumbasses jeering and throwing popcorn.
No, you need the isolation, the feeling that you're alone, as they are.
So watch it at home, alone, with the curtains drawn and the lights out, the
phone off the hook and make sure there will be no ditractions.
Hook your DVD up to a good "surround sound stereo" and sit back and relax.
First, go through the extra's.
First of all, read the Blair Witch Legacy, a chronological summary of all the
things that happened to compose of the Blair Witch mythos.
After that, you'll have a good understanding of what the "legend" is about.
Now watch the documentary, "The Curse Of The Blair Witch", not a making of,
but a mock documentary with various "experts" trying to prove/disprove the
events that happen in the history of the Blair Witch.
By this time, this is so cleverly done, I was thinking "is this really fake?
Looks a bit TOO real to me".
Now prepare yourself for a journey into self paranoia by watching the film.
With the "Legacy...." and the "Curse..." still fresh in your mind, you begin
to believe that what you're seeing is actual footage.
Especially, when you consider later, it wasn't all acted.
It interests you right up to the final 5 or 10 minutes, they just scare the
hell out of you and drive you out of your mind.
Once you've watched it like this, you're still not sure whether it is really
faked.
Not untill I showed it to a friend who saw it at the cinema and hated it, viewing
it the way I described above, he loved it.
Just a shame the sequel looks so crap and I don't think the prequel will be
much better.
It's definately a film that should stand alone.
Now, delve into whats left of the extra's.
There's some newly discovered footage (deleted scenes), production notes, cast
and crew information, theatrical trailers, DVD rom extra's but best of all is
the audio commentary, this tells you as the film is playing, what was faked,
what wasn't, how much the cast knew was fake and when (surprisingly very little)
and loads of other interesting bits of information.
This is a film that is definately worth having.
