Welcome to one of the main features of 'Castle Dracula,' the movie reviews section.
The reviews placed here are from all around the world, from the USA to the UK Japan
and everything inbetween. The formats reviewed are video and DVD. I have included the
origin of the film reviewed so you can check your player for compatibility. You may
also notice that there are some DVD-R reviews. These are not 'bootlegs' or 'copies'
but official screeners that I have been sent containing an as yet unreleased film to
review. All the reviews here have been reviewed either by myself or my current movie
reviewers. If you're an avid watcher of horror movies then why not join 'Castle Dracula'
as an official 'staff member' reviewing them. To do so, just click on the 'Join My Staff'
link in the menu to the left for details of this and other vacancies.
New reviews are normally placed here once a week, check my front page for under 'Castle
Dracula Updates' to see what latest movie reviews have been placed.

- Blood Feast 2: All U Can Eat - US Limited Edition Double Disc Set -

First of all, this is a very cheap package and I don't mean in price. To say it is
a 2-disc set, why is there only placement for one disc?
Yes, that’s what I said it’s just a standard single DVD case. The extra disc comes
in an envelope and is slipped in with the 'chapter list' card.
Another thing that points to the cheapness of this casing is the way there is no
mention on the front cover of the DVD that this is a 2-disc DVD set. You need to
look on the back of the DVD and below the list of 'Special Features' to find any
mention of this. It’s written in small black writing, "2 disc set", with a small
picture of 2 black DVD discs situated below. Not the most obvious way of advertising
a 2-disc DVD set and easily missed by the casual observer.
However, look for the 'rating' and a bold "Not Rated NR" is written in black upon a
square white background. At least it looks like you were supposed to know the film is
the un-rated version. So, the message I personally receive from the packaging is that
the idea of it being a 2-disc DVD set seems to have been an afterthought. Either that
or this is taking ‘cost cutting’ to new levels.
But what of the film itself?
Well the film looks no different than the original H.G.Lewis films.
In other words the sets are cheap and tacky, the acting is abysmal and for the most
part, the effects are laughable. But being the unrated version, gory as hell (maybe
his goriest!) and being an H.G.Lewis fan myself, I neither expected nor asked for
anything less and I can’t help but like it.
Like his previous films they are an acquired taste. If you like them, you'll lap this
up, if you don’t, this will do nothing to change your mind except reinforce your
opinion that they’re nothing but cheap trash.
The way the film has been filmed has the exact same feel as all his others, it’s as if
he’s never been away.
The plot, or what there is of it, is set 20 years after the original bloodbath happened
in which the ‘mad as a goose’ Egyptian ‘Fuad Ramses’ opened a catering shop that served
as a "front" for his occult practices. Mainly being the chopping up of young girls to
appease his Egyptian Goddess ‘Ishtar’ with his ‘feast’.
Now in the same town, ‘Fuad’s’ unknowing grandson ‘Fuad Ramses III’ has inherited the
same shop and intends to open a catering business. He’s barely got the key in the door
before he becomes possessed by ‘Ishtar’ himself and is forced to carry on the family
tradition. His first clients for his new business need a wedding party organised. As
there will be plenty of guests, what better way to cut costs by actually serving a few.
Needless to say, much death, carnage, blood flowing and even some laughs follow.
Not the deepest of plots but what did you expect from an H.G.Lewis film?
The film is in 'Letterbox Format 1.85:1 and is crystal clear.
The audio is a 'nothing special' Dolby Digital Stereo. Although it must be said that the
soundtrack, by a band called 'Southern Culture On The Skids,' is pretty good and sometimes
(intentionally) funny. The sound of the band matches the film perfectly. The same old
cheesy rock 'n' roll sounding music from his previous "classics."
Extras for disc 1 consist of: -
Photo gallery - personally I find little interest in these.
Trailer for the film - plus some other movie releases.
Trailer for ‘Flesh For The Beast’ - this is ‘Shriek Show’s’ debut attempt at filmmaking.
'Making Of Flesh For The Beast' - I must say this looks like a complete gore-fest.
The 2nd discs extra’s are as follows: -
On The Set With Hershell Gordon Lewis – be a ‘fly on the wall’ and watch a short
montage of the ‘Godfather Of Gore’ interact and give instructions to the cast and
crew.
Behind The Scenes With Cast And Crew – another montage of behind the scenes footage
includes short interviews but nothing you would watch more than once.
Behind The Gore – I like this, behind the scenes footage of some of the more “redder”
scenes with the actual scene from the film playing in the corner of the screen for
comparison.
Deleted Scenes – You’ll never guess what these are....scenes not used in the movie!
I personally fail to see why this was a 2-disc set given the length of the extras.
If you’re an H.G.Lewis fan however, the film is up to his old standards.
Maybe I'm being picky but I would have just preferred better extras.
