Welcome to one of the main features of 'Castle Dracula,' the movie reviews section.
The reviews placed here are from all around the world, from the USA to the UK Japan
and everything inbetween. The formats reviewed are video and DVD. I have included the
origin of the film reviewed so you can check your player for compatibility. You may
also notice that there are some DVD-R reviews. These are not 'bootlegs' or 'copies'
but official screeners that I have been sent containing an as yet unreleased film to
review. All the reviews here have been reviewed either by myself or my current movie
reviewers. If you're an avid watcher of horror movies then why not join 'Castle Dracula'
as an official 'staff member' reviewing them. To do so, just click on the 'Join My Staff'
link in the menu to the left for details of this and other vacancies.
New reviews are normally placed here once a week, check my front page for under 'Castle
Dracula Updates' to see what latest movie reviews have been placed.
- Deep Blue Sea - UK DVD -
The problem with this film is it's going to get compared to "Jaws", which
is not a bad thing, just that they're two totally diferrent kind of films.
The basic story line is an underwater laboratory is doing some genetic experiments
on the brains of captured sharks to find a cure for Alzheimer's disease (eh???),
when a tropical storm causes the crew to be cut off.
We learn that the experiments had a side effect, it made the sharks brains
larger and a helluva lot more intelligent (what???).
So much so that the sharks decide(???) to break the protective glass, thus
flooding the underwater site and granting them access to feast upon who they
choose.
Allright, I never said it was the most intelligent film i'd ever seen, but
in a kind of dumbass way, it works.
There are some moments that will make you jump, some genuine surprises (like
the one person whom you thought it would be obvious they'd survive, gets "gobbled
up" at the one time you least expext it) and even though there is some cheesy
effects (very, very few) there ARE some outstanding effects too.
It even has some comedic moments.
Just turn off your brain before you watch it.
The picture is brilliant, the sound is outstanding (even though the music doesn't
sound that too dissimilar from another certain fishy film) and the extras don't
disappoint either.
Apart from the obvious theatrical trailer, you get DVD Rom extra's, stills
gallery, deleted scenes (which add a whole lot more to the story so I cannot
see why they were removed in the first place, an audio commentary from Renny
Harlin and Samuel L. Jackson (who's more intent on speaking about where he
played golf than shooting the movie) and two documentaries, "When Sharks
Attack - The Making Of Deep Blue Sea" and "The Sharks Of The Deep Blue Sea"
(a featurrette about sharks in general).
Apart from the crappy cardboard case that the film comes in and what Warner
Bro's seem intent in putting all their films in though nobody else does anymore,
this is a must for any collection.
