- Eyes Of Laura Mars - US DVD -
Not technically a 'horror' film, "The Eyes of Laura Mars" was written by John Carpenter and
given the A list treatment, making it a classy, if flawed, thriller. "Laura Mars" (Faye Dunaway)
is New York’s female answer to Helmut Newton. She’s an edgy fashion photographer who takes
disturbingly brutal photos of lovely, pencil-thin models. Her work is the controversial toast
of the town until someone starts to re-enact the violent scenes from her photos, only this
time it’s for real. But here’s the twist - no matter where "Laura" is she can see the murders
through the killer’s eyes!!!
Enter "Detective John Neville" (Tommy Lee Jones), a hot cop who wants to find the guilty party
and bed "Ms. Mars" in the process. Is our culprit "Donald" (Rene Auberjonois), "Laura’s" effeminate
business manager, or maybe it’s her ex-con driver "Tommy" (Brad Douriff), or perhaps it’s the
ex-husband "R.J." (Raul Julia)?
With this many suspects, something tells me that "Ms. Mars" should maybe stay away from men
for a while!
Visually speaking, this film is virtually flawless. It’s a beautiful glimpse of that rich New
York lifestyle we’ve all heard so much about…70's style. Director Irvin Kirshner strikes a lovely
pose with "Eyes..." Beautifully vapid models litter the background and the breathtakingly chic set
design help create the feeling of a decadent New York. The soundtrack is full of cool disco tunes
(featuring Barbara Striesand belting out "Prisoner") and the murders aren’t half bad either. If
only Kirshner could have taken a better look at the silly dialog and set it straight. You may find
yourself laughing out loud during Faye Dunaway’s over the top confession of love for Mr. Jones.
If you don’t, then you’re surely made of stronger stuff than I. But after everything is said and
done, "Eyes..." is a very entertaining way to whittle away a Saturday night. Columbia Pictures has
released a beautifully packaged DVD. The disc can be viewed in widescreen or standard, depending
on you tastes along with an entertaining director commentary. There’s also a photo gallery which
hosts an interesting voice over describing scenes that never made it to the screen. However, the
best extra is a short featurette, which tries very hard to make "Eyes..." look like the next "Chinatown!"
A Roman Polanski film this isn’t!
Everyone from Faye Dunaway to one of the featured models(!) puts their two cents in as to why this
is a classic, making it a must for fashion conscious horror buffs!
