- Interview With The Vampire:Special Edition - UK DVD -
Interview with the Vampire is a Neil Jordan film based on the classic novel by Anne
Rice.
It is the story of a vampire called 'Louis' (played by Brad Pitt) who comes across a
reporter who is following him but instead of drinking his blood he decides to tell
him his life story from being a mere mortal in 1700's New Orleans to a vampire in
modern days.
It is 1791 and 'Louis's wife' has just died in childbirth and he longs to end his
suffering and die himself.
Unbeknownst to him death was watching and was soon going to show its face in the form
of the vampire 'Lestat' (played by Tom Cruise).
Of course 'Louis' soon did die a mortal death but was reborn a vampire.
This life continues with his hatred of killing to starts drinking rat's blood, which
'Lestat' finds highly amusing. With 'Lestats' temper, his childish games and his need
to keep 'Louis' beside him forever makes 'Louis' hate him more and more.
When suspicions are aroused 'Louis' burns down their home and they are forced to flee
into the city.
Whilst out in New Orleans he comes across a young girl who's mother has just died
from the plague.
To his shock he finds peace when he drinks from the young girl but this peace is
shattered when 'Lestat' ridicules him.
In a last bid attempt to keep 'Louis', he creates the child vampire 'Claudia'.
After many years, 'Claudia' becomes jealous that she will never grow up to be a
woman and blames 'Lestat' for making her what she is.
So now both 'Louis' and 'Claudia' hate 'Lestat', they set about planning to kill
'Lestat'. But can a vampire really be killed?
Although this is a big budget, big name film they have kept to the storyline and
you immediately know this is a great film from the opening scene. Brad Pitt plays
an excellent 'Louis', who is loving and caring and not the ruthless killer, 'Lestat'
is.
He also is so convincing as a vampire that you could almost say had a soul, who
hates killing humans. Tom Cruise plays a good 'Lestat' but he wouldn't be my first
choice in actors to play the role. His character is portrayed as evil and yes this
is how it is played but there is something lacking in the way Tom Cruise plays
'Lestat'. I think knowing the book very well is a hindrance to watching the film.
We also see Antonio Banderas playing an excellent 'Armand'. This is one character
and actor who cannot be faulted in this film.
But the best scenes are all stolen by Kirsten Dunst who plays 'Claudia'. It is her
first role in a film and she acts like a professional, a modern day Jodie Foster.
One of her most memorable scenes is when she wakes up from her mortal death and
says "want some more." Of course she means blood. She is fearless and scary but
shows a sensitive side that usually only years of work can bring.
The film itself says true to the book and with its magnificent sets in New Orleans
and Paris you can envisage what Anne Rice wanted you to in the book.
Although this is an excellent film it is not the story that makes it this good,
it is the strong, memorable characters and the actors who play them.
Whether you're an Anne Rice or horror fan it doesn't matter, this is one film you
have to see before you die.
This is a review of the recently released special edition which has a whole host
of extras from trailers, behind the scenes documentary and cast interviews.
